The Lowdown: Improve Your Speech - American
English
The difference is smaller in the North Eastern States of the
U.S.A. and increases as you travel to the South and the West.
The Northeastern states like Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode
Island and Massachusetts speak an English that is close to
the British English. On the other end of the scale you find the
southern states, the most remarkable one certainly Texas with
the famous 'Texas drawl'.
To find out more about the differences in American English
and British English, your best bet is to watch newscasts from
the two TV stations that represent these two English accents:
BBC News TV for British English and a CNN TV Newscast for the
American English (and often Texan English!) accent.
If you want to learn how an American pronunciation and
accent sounds, your best bet is listen to audio books narrated
by american speakers.
